Ranked by purity (lead & cadmium)

Cocoa / cacao

This category now blends two evidence streams carefully: Consumer Reports Oct-2023 retail cocoa testing, As You Sow’s chocolate metals database / settlement context, and live brand-level metals disclosures when a company publishes unusually specific current results. That lets me reward transparent low-metals cacao while avoiding unsupported product-level claims where CR only supports a broader cocoa-containing-food caution.

Navitas still anchors the retail cocoa-powder evidence, while Ora Cacao holds the current transparency podium. Pure Kakaw Cusco, Pacha Mana Pure Ground Ceremonial Cacao, Embue Cacao Semuliki Uganda / Zorzal DR, CocoaVia 500mg Cocoa Flavanols Powder, and newly reviewed Ghirardelli Intense Dark 86% Cacao Bar are the strongest runner-up/watchlist candidates after verified product-page/image passes plus brand-published, CR, As You Sow, or ConsumerLab-referenced metals numbers. Pacha Mana's 2025 Exact Scientific COA reports Pb <0.010 ppm and Cd 0.126 ppm; Embue's October 2025 table reports Semuliki at Pb 0.0204 ppm / Cd 0.3571 ppm and Zorzal at Pb 0.0256 ppm / Cd 0.2469 ppm; CocoaVia's exact product FAQ says ConsumerLab measured cadmium at 0.2 mcg/g; As You Sow's 2022 Ghirardelli 86% rows show lead exposure 0.1–0.2 µg/serving and cadmium 1.4–2.0 µg/serving, and CR named the Ghirardelli 86% bar as one of the dark bars below both thresholds. They stay below the podium because the evidence is not CR-style retail cocoa-powder sampling, CocoaVia is a cocoa-extract supplement, and Ghirardelli is a dark-chocolate bar rather than cocoa powder. Wildly Organic Fermented Cacao Powder remains another transparent runner-up (live COA: Pb 0.041 ppm, Cd 0.547 ppm), but it stays below the podium because its cadmium is close to the EU cocoa-powder limit; Santa Barbara/CocoaDynamics stays useful but not promoted.

The caution tier separates CR-confirmed cocoa-powder problems from broader cocoa-containing mixes: Droste remains the clear worst powder, Hershey’s Natural replaces the previously unsupported Special Dark entry, and Bob’s Red Mill cake mix is included only as a cocoa-containing CR warning. Navitas Organics Cacao Nibs are now a separate As You Sow serving-size/product-form caution because 2022 rows reported Cd 6.9–7.6 µg per then-label serving; this does not undermine the Navitas powder pick. Wildly Organic non-fermented cacao powder stays an explicit caution watchlist row because its own COA reports cadmium slightly above the EU consumer cocoa-powder limit; Ora Oaxacan Spice is now flagged as a botanical-blend caution because Ora’s own testing page says lead was 74 ppb, likely from secondary spices/maca. Terrasoul remains a softer opacity watchlist item because I found origin claims but no public Pb/Cd COA.
